Communist Party of India (Marxist) central committee member and leader of the opposition, Com V.S. Achuthanandan handed over the party flag to be hoisted at the 20-th Party Congress of the CPI (M) at Kozhikode to CPI (M) Central Committee member, A. Vijayaraghavan, at a function at Valiya Chudukkad, where the immortal martyrs of Punnapra - Vayalar struggle are buried. The Punnapra-Vayalar Martyrs' Memorial at Valiya Chudukkad has been the resting place of many Communist stalwarts including P. Krishna Pillai, T.V. Thomas, M.N. Govindan Nair and recently C.K. Chandrappan. Veteran of Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, P.K. Chandranandan presided over the function. MLA, C.K. Sadasivan, CPI (M) leader, C.S. Sujatha and others attended the function.
Later, Mr. Vijayaraghavan handed over the party flag to Olympian Manoj Lal, who along with other athletes will take it in a procession through the district and will enter Ernakulam district through Kumbalam. The final point of the procession for Saturday is at Vyttila. G. Sudhakaran, MLA and Mr. Vijayaraghavan are accompanying the procession which is expected to reach Kozhikode by April 3 evening.
The flagpole to be raised at the 20th Party congress venue in Kozhikode began its journey as a jatha on 1st April 2012 from Kayyur, the Land of the four revolutionary heroes who were hanged by the British Imperialiest for leading a farmers agitation. The jadha led by jatha captain CPIM Central Committee Member K. Karunakaran, MP, was formally handed by party Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Large number of people stood on either side of the National Highway to receive the jatha. There was also a procession by red volunteers in front of the vehicle carrying the flagpole.
