CPI (M) Maharashtra State conference begins in Akole

The 20th State conference of the CPI (M) in Maharashtra got off to a rousing start at Akole in Ahmednagar district on the 25th of March 2012. The venue of Akole is historic as it was the birthplace and workplace of the legendary Comrade Buva Navale, who was the first President of the Maharashtra Rajya Kisan Sabha; Comrade Navale was elected at its first State conference held at Titwala in 1945.

A large public meeting marked the beginning of the conference in the afternoon of the 25th of March. PB members Com Sitaram Yechury and Com K Varadharajan, along with many State leaders of the CPI(M), were on the stage. Speaking on the occasion, Com Yechury said that the UPA-2 government at the centre had reached an advanced stage of degeneration. It has reacched a stage where the cabinet meetings have to be scheduled in the Tihar Jail. The government has no money to invest in a food security system or employment guarantee, but it is ready to give tax concessions worth Rs 5 lakh crore to the Indian corporate classes.

A large number of people had gathered to hear the leaders. An important feature of the event was that women participated in large numbers. They greeted Com Yechury and Com Varadharajan by putting on traditional turbans on their head.
