For the first time in the history of the Karnataka State politics, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has come to power in a taluk panchayat by winning the Bagepalli Taluk Panchayat in Chickballapur district.
Ever since the formation of the party, the CPI(M) had not held the reins of administration in any rural local body in the State, although it had won a few seats.
The CPI(M) has come to power in Bagepalli Taluk Panchayat by winning eight of the 15 seats. The Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) have won three seats each while one seat was bagged by an independent candidate. In two seats party lost by a meagre margin below 10 votes.
An elated former Bagepalli MLA and senior CPI(M) leader G.V. Srirama Reddy said the hard work put in by the party workers and the people's faith in his party were responsible for the victory. “We had won stray seats in the State. But we have come to power for the first time,” Mr. Reddy told The Hindu.
The CPI(M) emerged the single largest party in Gudibande Taluk Panchayat in the Bagepalli constituency. Here party won 5 out of the 11 seats. In Chikbellappur district pachayat too party has won 2 seats. Party also won two seats in Gulbarga and udupi.
