Hundreds of youth activists of Democratic Youth Federation of India staged a hunger strike to demand the early building of a Sethusamudram shipping channel in Tamil nadu coast. CPI-M politbuero member Brinda Karat inaugurated the protest organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India's (DYFI) Tamil Nadu state unit at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. Already an amount of Rs. 2400 crores had been spend on this project.The Sethusamudram project will help ships avoid a 785-km detour around Sri Lanka.
Brinda Karat questioned the position taken by the DMK led government in Tamil Nadu regarding this project and asked the government to give their views regarding this. "The first steps on this project and the NOC was given by the then BJP led NDA government, and the further actions were intiated by the first UPA governement. Disregarding the urge of the people of Tamil nadu the government is surrendering to the communal forces and is trying to shelf the project" Brinda added.
DYFI Tamil Nadu state secretary Com. S G Ramesh Babu presided over the function. DYFI All India President Com P Sreeramakrishnan, All India Secretray Com. Tapas Sinha addressed the gathering. Hundreds of DYFI selected cadres from around Tamil nadu participated in the 24 hr hunger strike.
