Addressing CPI (M) workers at the rally Com V.J.K. Nair, Karnataka State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State had failed to implement the Rs. 2 a kg rice scheme to the poor as promised by it in its 2008 election manifesto. Com. Nair said the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa spoke about distributing rice to the poor at Rs. 2 a kg. “Where is it now?,” he asked.
Com. Nair said the State Government had been getting funds under the Jawarlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme for developing infrastructure. “Why should it build only bus stands and operate new buses using funds under the scheme. Why can't the Government build mass houses for poor under the scheme?” he said. He said that after building mass houses for the poor, the Government could rent it out. Com. Nair alleged that the BJP and the Congress represented capitalists. The country was now witnessing “jobless growth”. He said that earlier there were tiles, cashew, printing press, and weaving unit workers in Dakshina Kannada. Now poor people had become anganawadi and mid-day meal workers and Accredited Social Health Activists.
CPI (M) State Secreteriate Member G. N. Nagaraj said that foodgrain and gold prices had gone up at the same pace. Gold prices had gone up as capitalists had purchased it in bulk. He alleged that there was “crony capitalism” in the country. He said that communalism and terrorism were threats to the country. Industrial output in the country had fallen.
CPI(M) Dakshina Kannada district Secretary B. Madhava presided over the meetings. Other leaders K R Shriyan, Balakrishna Shetty, Yadava Shetty, U B Lokayya, Krishnappa Salian, B M Bhat and others were on the dais. Earlier reception committee general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal welcomed the gathering.
Before the meeting, a procession was taken out from Dr Ambedkar (Jyoti) circle to the venue. With all participants in red attire, it was like a vibrant red sea of human population moving in discipline.
Earlier in the delegate session the conference has passed a resolution urging the Government to ban “made snana” at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and other temples in the district.
It has passed another resolution urging the Government to ban “pankthi bedha” (discrimination in serving meal) in temples. A release from Sunil Kumar Bajal, secretary of the reception committee of the conference, said that the conference resolved that ‘pankthi bedha' and ‘made snana' promoted caste system.
It said the conference decided to intensify its agitation against these practices. The conference condemned attack on K.S. Shivaramu, president, Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruta Vedike, at Kukke Subrahmanya recently. It urged the Government to take legal action against the attackers.
The conference passed another resolution urging the Government to suspend Assistant Commissioner of Police T.R. Jagannath and constable of Ullal Police Station Satish from service for allegedly assaulting Jeevanraj Kuthar, leader of the Students Federation of India, recently. If not, the CPI (M) would intensify its agitation.
More than 25 resolutions were passed at the conference.
