Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who came to power banking on the “betrayal” by the Janata Dal (Secular), has now betrayed the people of the State with the Bharatiya Janata Party Government failing to supply rice at Rs. 2 a kg as promised in the election manifesto, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said here on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference in Bangalore, CPI (M) State committee secretary V.J.K. Nair said that Karnataka was the only southern State not supplying rice at Rs. 2 a kg for below the poverty line families.
He said a meeting of party's State Committee held recently analysed the electricity shortage and demanded that the State Government procure power from surplus pool and supply to it to the consumers — both the industries and households.
Condemning the communal riots in Shimoga, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Mr. Nair alleged that the BJP Government had failed to prevent communal activities — be it Islamic fundamentalists or the Hindutva forces, that are making the life of the people miserable. “The recent violence in Shimoga following an article published in a newspaper has given rise to doubts about criminal conspiracy behind publication and corresponding communal clashes,” he said.
Mr. Nair said the party would start political conventions from March 5 that will culminate in an indefinite dharna during April through which the CPI (M) will demand supply of rice at Rs. 2 a kg, minimum wages, housing, regulation of contract system and halt to forcible acquisition of land. The State Committee will send a contingent of about 2,000 persons to participate in the rally organised by the Left parties on March 12 in New Delhi.
