Left Front election campaign from February: Biman Bose

The campaign for the 2011 elections to the West Bengal Assembly will begin with a massive rally planned in Kolkata on February 13, it was announced by Biman Bose, chairman of the State Left Front Committee, here on Tuesday.

“The February 13 rally will be culmination of a 40-day State-wide programme highlighting issues such as price rise, mismanagement of public funds that has been revealed in various scams, and the anarchy and terror tactics being indulged in by the main Opposition party in West Bengal,” Mr. Bose told journalists after a State Left Front meeting.

The campaign will be carried out at the block level in all districts. Simultaneously preliminary preparations for the elections, including strengthening the organisation at the booth level, will be done in this period, he added.

On the incidents of campus violence being witnessed recently in the State, Mr. Bose said: “Student politics should be run by students, but these incidents of campus violence have not been caused by students.”

Claiming that outsiders, particularly senior leaders of the Trinamool Congress, had become involved in student politics, he said the Left Front had undertaken a programme against the anarchy and chaos being unleashed in campuses.

‘More police needed'

Mr. Bose was also critical of the police over the handling of certain law and order situations, saying that they should have been more alert.

Mentioning the incident outside a college at Andul in Howrah district where Swapan Koley, a member of the Student Federation of India, was killed, he said: “On the last day for filing of nomination papers, why were only four policemen present at the spot?”

He also cited the example of the recent killing of seven supporters of the All-India Forward Bloc in separate incidents in Purulia district. ‘Some of the hamlets in which the killings took place are very scattered. More police could have been rushed to the spot,” he said.

Semi-Fascist TMC Terror on Academic Institutions and education system

Transcending even the semi fascist terror of seventies the education environment of West Bengal is under serious threat of TMC goons. After a long and smooth democratic functioning of almost two decades, schools and colleges have been facing the semi-fascist terror from TMC-Maoist combined force. During filing nominations for students’ election in Jagabandhu College, Andul, Howrah, on 16th December, 2010 TMCP-guided outsiders and local criminals killed Comrade Swapan Kole, a second year commerce student in a series of unprecedented brutal attacks. The killing was so atrocious in nature that has quavered the conscience of mass psyche in the state.

TMCP hooligans nakedly guided by their state leaders Madan Mitra, Bobby Hakim unleashed attack on SFI workers and common students in Ashutosh College on 16th December. The incident started with a physical assault on SFI candidates and common students while they were filing nominations. They were driven outside the college premises where TMC leaders guided the whole operation. Souvik Hajra, a SFI supporter got a severe injury in his left eye. Doctors expressed little hope for any recovery of the eye.

Students of Ashutosh College on protest blockaded the Hazra crossing and organized a huge rally in the adjacent area. To shift however the media spot away from such open attacks and intimidations, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee made a false allegation on SFI workers to have rallied toward her Kalighat residence. Party Secretary Biman Basu in a press conference on 17th December slammed Mamata for making such false allegation against common students. SFI state leadership also reiterated that they had no programme to go to TMC chief’s residence.

The carpet assault however continues when five students of St. Paul’s College, Kolkata were attacked in Salkia Howrah on 17th December. FIR has been lodged against three TMCP goons in Golabari Police Station. SFI state committee has called all students of the state schools and colleges to observe Black Day on Saturday 18th December and a general strike on 20th December.

On the other side, TMC-ally Maoists have killed 7 Forward Block workers in Jhalda block, Purulia. The brutal attack was probably in reply to a recently organized mass meeting by the district Forward Block. Left Front chairman Biman Basu condemned the assault unequivocally and urged people to identify the true ‘enemy’ of the state.

An unprecedented series of attacks on left workers specially CPI(M) leaders and workers unleashed in West Bengal that already have taken huge death toll of more than 300 martyrs of Bengal. The attacks are so planned and motivated that kill not only the party workers but hit class identities also to curb down organized movements in the state. The situation has got worsen when, in last one year or more, teachers, students, non-teaching staffs of schools, colleges have been under serious threat of lives. More than 10 teachers have been killed only in Jangal Mahol last year.

On 4th September Maoists in Salboni, West Midnapore, dragged Headmaster Dibakar Mahato out of the school and killed in front of the students. He was teaching mathematics to class-III students. Rabindranath Mahato was killed by Maoists as he motivated his students not to rally with Maoist organization PCPA. Subimal Mahato of Ranga High School, Purulia, was also brutally killed by Maoists.

7 Forward Bloc members shot dead by Maoist Terrorists

In one of the most brutal killing in recent past, seven local leaders and workers of Forward Block including an woman Panchayat Pradhan were murdered by Maoists at Jhalda, Purulia district of West Bengal on 17th December night.

The name of the victims are Ms. Chapla Garhiat (Panchayat Pradhan), Tapan Singh Sardar, Kinker Singh, Bhupeshwar Mahato, Ananta Mahato, Aju Singh Moora, Govardhan Singh. All are workers of All India Forward Bloc and Agragami Aadivasi Samity, the adivasi organization of Forward Bloc.

On Thursday night, a group of Maoists attacked with deadly weapons and kidnapped them to some unknown destination. On Friday morning the local people found brutally defaced dead bodies of them. The Maoists have killed many CPI(M) cadres and leaders in Purulia in last six years. They had killed mainly the poor peasants, agricultural workers and tribals. In sheer nature of brutality yesterday’s attack was unprecedented.

Forward leaders in Kolkata have alleged that in the face of growing resistance against the Maoists among the tribals , they have retaliated in such a barbaric nature. Left Front Chairman Biman Basu, in a press conference has strongly condemned the attack. Left Front has called for a 12hour Bandh in Purulia district on 18th December. Protest Day will be observed in the whole state as well.

Biman Basu has alleged that 221 Left activists have been killed in three districts of Jangal Mahal alone after 2009 LokSabha elections. In the whole state, 337 Left activists have been murdered during the same period. The Maoists are acting in tandem with Trinamool Congress. This is evident in many such attacks in Purulia district also.

Wikileaks Exposes US Interference

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The cables from the US Embassy in India released so far by Wikileaks provide a revealing picture of Indo-US relations and the extent of US interference in India’s domestic political affairs.

The manner in which the US Embassy intervened to influence Indian political parties and opinion-makers on the Nuclear Deal, the pressures on foreign policy matters such as the attitude towards Iran, are all laid out. One cable reports that Indian officials are ‘loathe to admit publicly that India and the US have begun coordinating foreign policies.’

The cables set out how relations have improved to make ‘Delhi much more amenable to co-operating’. These show the actual state of India-US relations after the signing of the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.

One cable states that they have a ‘true partner in the current Indian Government led by Manmohan Singh’. In contrast, in another cable the US diplomat has made objectionable remarks about the CPI(M) General Secretary who is not amenable to their interests.

As the Wikileaks cables from around the world have shown, the United States pursues single-mindedly its imperialist interests. The unfortunate part is the complicity of the Manmohan Singh government in furthering some of these interests.

Protest Maoist Killings

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau strongly condemns the dastardly killing of seven activists of the All India Forward Bloc and the Forward Bloc affiliated tribal organization Agrogrami Adivasi Samiti by the Maoists. The activists include a woman panchayat pradhan Ms. Chapala Garhiat. These activists were abducted on the night of December 16 and were killed subsequently by the Maoist executioners. This is the fist time such a big number of killings of political activists has taken place in West Bengal. This is part of the ongoing sequence of murders in cold blood and shows the depths to which Maoists depredations can stoop. The killings add upto 221 of Left activists and leaders since the last Lok Sabha elections in the three districts of Jangal Mahal as a result of the close complicity between the Maoists and the Trinamul Congress.

The Polit Bureau is confident that these vile attempts to drown the Left movement in blood will end up in failure. Thousands of people in Jangal Mahal are rising to protest these killings and depredations. As in the past, the Left movement will not be cowed down and the entire peace loving and democratic minded people in Jangal Mahal and rest of the state and country will overcome this campaign of terror. We appeal to all peace and democracy loving people of the country to protest against Maoist depredations. We also call upon our Party units to organize protest actions against these dastardly killings.

DYFI cadres protest fuel price hike

More than 300 Democratic Youth Federation of India members were arrested after they staged a road blockade agitation in Thiruppur to protest against the rising fuel prices, poor infrastructure at government-run hospitals and delays in issuance of ration cards, among other issues.

DYFI district secretary R. Vadivel said that the periodic increases in the fuel prices over the last few months had plunged those in the lower economic segments of the society into a state of despair. On the issuance of ration cards, he alleged that about 10,000 people from the city and its suburbs were yet to receive the cards despite applying for the same many months ago. The members came down heavily on the lack of hygiene and inadequate infrastructure at the headquarters hospital. The DYFI called upon the State Government to procure motors from micro and small industries under the scheme to provide these free of cost to farmers.

Similar agitations were carried out by DYFI cadres across the state.

TDP and Left discuss joint campaign against scandals

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the CPI have decided to launch a nationwide campaign against corruption in high places and the series of scams being unearthed.

The two Left parties have begun discussions with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Janata Dal (Secular), the Asom Gana Parishad, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Biju Janata Dal for holding joint rallies in different State capitals.

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, his CPI counterpart A.B. Bardhan and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu held discussions here on Wednesday on the course of action to be adopted.

The leaders also condemned the latest revision of petrol prices and expressed concern over the cascading effect it would have on other prices and the burden it would cause to the common man. They would organise protest demonstrations across the country demanding a rollback of the hike.

Briefing reporters, the three leaders justified the Opposition's insistence on a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe, saying it would go deep into the 2G spectrum issue to enable stringent action against the guilty and suggest steps to avoid recurrence of such scandals. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was, however, refusing to order the probe for reasons best known to it, they said.

On the petrol price hike, the leaders said it was an assault on the people and result of deregulation of prices by the UPA government.

Fidel Castro message to the opening ceremony of the 17th WFYS

Comrades:
It is a great pleasure and honour for me to agree to the request that you made for me to send a message to the 17th World Festival of Youth and Students that is taking place in the Homeland of Nelson Mandela, the living symbol of the struggle against the odious apartheid system.

Cuba hosted two world festivals: the 11th in 1978 and the 14th in 1997.

For the first time, the Festival ceased to be held in Europe and took place in a country in this hemisphere. The decision was made by the 9th Assembly of the World Federation of Democratic Youth which was held in Varna, Bulgaria at the end of 1974.

Those were different times: the world was facing serious problems, but ones that were less dramatic. The more progressive youth was fighting for the right of all human beings to a decent life; the old dream of the greatest thinkers of our species when it was clear that science, technology, the productivity of labour and the development of consciousness was making it possible.

In a brief lapse of time, globalization accelerated, communications reached unsuspected levels, the means to promote education, health and culture multiplied. Our dreams were not without foundation. In that spirit, the 11th World Festival of Youth and Students took place and our people also took part in it.

At the General Council of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, held precisely in heroic South Africa at the beginning of October in 1995, it was approved to hold the 14th Festival in Havana; 12,000 delegates from 132 countries would be taking part. Our country at that time had been struggling for almost 37 years in the political and ideological battle against the empire and its brutal economic blockade.

Until the decade of the 1980s, not only were the Peoples’ Republic of China, the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Laos and Kampuchea in existence who had been withstanding genocidal wars and the crimes of the Yankees, but also the socialist bloc in Europe and the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, an enormous multinational State with 22,402,200 square kilometres, enormous resources of agricultural lands, forests, oil, gas, minerals and more. Face to face with the imperialist superpower, with its more than 800 military bases deployed throughout the planet, the socialist superpower was surging.
The dissolution of the USSR, whatever the errors may have been at one or another moment in history, constituted a rough blow to the world’s progressive movement.

The Yankees moved quickly and spread their military bases and the use of facilities constructed by the USSR in order to encircle more tightly, with their war machinery the Russian Federation which continued to be a great power. The military bravado of the United States and its NATO allies increased in Europe and Asia. They unleashed the Kosovo War and disintegrated Serbia.

Within the area of our hemisphere, even before the collapse of the USSR, they invaded the Dominican Republic in 1965; they bombed and intervened in Nicaragua with mercenaries; their regular troops invaded Grenada, Panama and Haiti; they promoted bloody military coups in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay and supported Stroessner’s brutal repression in Paraguay.

They created the School of the Americas where they were not only training thousands of Latin American officers in conspiracies and coups d’état, but they were also familiarizing many with doctrines of hate and sophisticated torture practices while they were presenting themselves to the world as champions of “human rights and democracy”.
In the first decade of this century, the imperialist superpower appears to be overflowing its own riverbanks.

The bloody events of September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers of New York City were destroyed -a dramatic episode where around 3,000 persons lost their lives- and the subsequent attack on the Pentagon, fit like a glove on the hand of that unscrupulous adventurer George W. Bush for him to orchestrate the so-called war on terrorism that constitutes, simply, a dangerous escalation of the brutal policy that the US has been applying on our planet.

There has been more than sufficient proof of the embarrassing complicity of the NATO countries in such a reproachable war. That warmongering organization has just proclaimed its aim to intervene in any country in the world, wherever it feels that its interests, that is, US interests, are being threatened. The monopoly on the mass media, in the hands of the huge capitalist transnationals, has been used by imperialism to sow lies, create conditioned reflexes and to develop egoistical instincts. While the youth and students were travelling to South Africa to fight for a world in peace, with dignity and justice, in Great Britain university students and their professors were waging a pitched battle against the considerable and well-equipped repressive police who, on their spirited horses, were attacking them. There have been few times, and perhaps never, that we have seen such a show of capitalist “democracy”. The neoliberal governing parties, exercising their role of the police force of the oligarchy, betraying their electoral promises, passed measures in Parliament that raised the yearly fees for university students to $14,000. The worst of it all was the nerve with which the neoliberal parliamentarians stated that the “market was resolving that problem”. Only the rich had the right to a university degree.

A few days ago, the present US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, commenting on the secrets divulged by WikiLeaks stated: “The fact is, governments deal with the United States because it’s in their interest, not because they like us, not because they trust us, and not because they believe we can keep secrets. [...] some governments deal with us because they fear us, some because they respect us, most because they need us. We are still essentially, as has been said before, the indispensable nation”.Not a few intelligent and well-informed people harbour the conviction that the Yankee Empire, like all those coming before it, has entered its final phase and that the signs are irrefutable.

An article published on the TomDispatch website, translated from English by the Rebelión website presents four hypotheses about the probable course of events in the United States, and in all of them, world war appears as one of the possibilities even though it does not exclude that there may be another option. It adds that definitely that country will lose its dominant role in world exports of goods and in less than 15 years it will lose its dominant role in innovative technology and the privileged function of the dollar as the reserve currency. It quotes that already this year China has reached 12% in comparison to the US 11% in world exports of goods and it mentioned the presentation in October of this year by the Chinese Minister of Defence of the Tianhe-1ª super-computer, something so powerful that, in the words of an American expert, “it wipes out the No. 1 machine” existing in the United States.

Our dear compatriots, upon arriving in South Africa, among their first activities, paid fully-deserved tribute to the internationalist combatants who gave their lives fighting for Africa.
Fort the last 12 years, in neighbouring Haiti, our medical mission provides its services to the Haitian people; today, with the cooperation of the internationalist doctors graduated from ELAM (the Latin American School of Medicine). They also fight there for Africa by doing battle against the cholera epidemic, the disease of poverty, to prevent its spreading to that continent where, just like in Latin America, there is a lot of poverty. With their acquired experience, our doctors have extraordinarily lowered the death rate. Very near to South Africa, in Zimbabwe, in August of 2008, that epidemic broke out “explosively”, according to the Harare “Herald”. Robert Mugabe accused the governments of the United States and Great Britain of introducing the disease.

As proof of the total lack of Yankee scruples, it is necessary to remember that the government of the United States delivered nuclear weapons to the apartheid regime; the racists were at the point of using them against Cuban and Angolan troops which, after the victory at Cuito Cuanavale, were advancing southward, where the Cuban command, having suspicions about that danger, adopted the pertinent measures and tactics to give them total control of the air space. If they should try to use such weapons, they wouldn’t have obtained victory.

But it is legitimate to wonder: what would have happened if the South African racists had used nuclear weapons against the Cuban and Angolan troops? What would the international reaction have been? How would such a barbaric act have been justified? How would the USSR have reacted? These are questions we must ask ourselves.

When the racists handed over the government to Nelson Mandela, they didn’t say a single word to him, nor did they say what they did with those weapons. Investigation and the denunciation of such events would be of great service to the world, at this time. Dear compatriots, I urge you to present this topic at the World Festival of Youth and Students.
