Left front calls Tripura Bandh on Monday

The Left Front called a dawn-to-dusk bandh in Tripura on Monday to protest the hike in prices of petroleum products.

A press statement issued by the Left Front said the bandh was called by the Left Front committee, CITU and other frontal organisations of the front to protest the decision of the UPA government which is "anti-people and a cruel attack on people" and would lead to further inflation.

"The UPA government imposed the burden of hike in the prices of fuel when the country was facing 17 per cent hike in the prices of foods and other essential commodities," the statement said.

The ruling CPI(M) and its frontal organisations like DYFI and SFI today organised processions and squatting in different parts of the state to protest the hike in petroleum products.

Protests over fuel price hike

There was a huge protest over the hike in the price of petroleum products across the district. At Sangareddy, the CPM leaders led by party district general secretary Ch. Ramulu held a protest on the main road by pulling a car with ropes. Later, an effigy of the Union government was burnt

Protesting the hike in the prices of petroleum products, the activists of CPI (M) burnt the effigy of the Union government at Telangana crossroads in Mahaboobnagar. Several speakers including Kille Gopal, district Secretary of the party, criticised the UPA government for increasing the prices of petroleum products once again. They said that common people were already facing much hardships in purchasing the essential commodities and the latest increase will add fuel to the fire. They demanded the government to roll back the prices immediately. 

 Incensed over the reported decision of the Central government to hike the prices of fuel, kerosene and cooking gas, the activists of  CPI (M) organised protest demonstrations in the Nalgonda Town. The CPI (M) activists, led by the party district secretary N Narasimha Reddy, staged a novel demonstration with empty LPG cylinders from the party office to the clock tower centre in a symbolic protest against the price hike.  Activists of CPI(M) staged dharnas and burnt effigies at different places in Rajahmundry and Kakinada on Friday evening protesting against hike in prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas by the Centre.

CPI((M) workers staged dharna at Bhanugudi Centre in Kakinada and Nandam Ganiraju Centre in Rajahmundry. They burnt an effigy of the Union Government and raised slogans against the Petroleum Minister and the Central Government. CPI(M) leaders said the UPA government had miserably failed in keeping its election promises and chose to levy heavy burden on lower and middle class people by hiking prices of fuel. It also failed to check spiralling prices of essential commodities. They said even vegetables, pulses, sugar, tea powder were not in the reach of common man.

CPI (M) leaders took out a rally and burnt an effigy of the government at Raghavaiah park on Bandar road in Vijayawada. They said that instead of providing relief to the common man, the UPA government was hell bent on taking the prices of petrol and diesel to new heights, “which clearly shows their anti-people policy.” The move will have far-reaching effect on common man's life. Stating that the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG would have impact on the prices of essential commodities already ruling high, the CPI (M) city committee took out a protest rally on Friday evening.

The hike was the fourth since the UPA came to power for the second time and the 18 th in the last six years, CPI (M) Visakhapatnam district secretary Ch. Narsinga Rao said addressing the rally. He accused the government of not taking any alternative measures suggested by the CPI (M) and toeing the line of the oil companies. Reducing the quota of kerosene and increasing the price was a big burden, he added. The Left parties will launch a State-wide protest on Monday. CPI (M) city secretary K. Lokanadham and party leaders B. Ganga Rao, M.Jaggu Naidu, V.S. Padmanabha Raju, R. Bhagyalakshmi and Araku Valley ZPTC Killo Surendra participated.

CPI(M) slams Andhra Government on malaria fevers in Agency area

The State Government has once again failed to control malaria, jaundice, fevers and other diseases in the Visakha Agency and instead of providing relief to the Girijans it is lethargic and indifferent while the Minister for Tribal Welfare P. Balaraju is trying to play down the situation, CPI (M) district committee said here on Friday.

As many as 56 deaths were reported during June so far and 1,243 cases of malaria have been registered in the 12 out of 33 PHCs of the area but Mr. Balaraju claimed that only 125 cases have been registered. The Minister should tour the Agency to understand the situation, CPI (M) district secretariat member and Paderu division secretary M. Satyanarayana, Araku Valley ZPTC Killo Surendra, district committee members P. Appalanarsa and M. Narsinga Rao Padal said at a press conference. The State Health Minister was also not concerned about the Girijans, they alleged.

Survey

The CPI (M) conducted a survey in the 11 mandals of the Visakha Agency from June 17 to 20 and found that malaria would spread further if the Government failed to take action. malathion

CITU calls for Shutdown strike in West Bengal against Petroleum price hike

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called for 24-hour public transport strike in West Bengal Saturday to protest the fuel price hike. CITU state president Shyamal Chakraborty said buses, taxis, auto rickshaws, trams, tourist taxis and trucks and lorries will come within the purview of the strike. "It will start at 6 a.m. Saturday and continue till 6 a.m. Sunday," Chakraborty said

Strongly Oppose this Cruel Blow of petroleum price hike

The four Left parties – Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, All India Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party – have issued the following statement:

The decision of the UPA government to inflict a steep rise in the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene oil and cooking gas is a cruel blow against the people who are already suffering due to the runaway increase in the prices of food and essential commodities. The price of petrol has gone up by Rs. 3.50 per litre, diesel by Rs. 2 per litre, kerosene oil by Rs. 3 per litre and cooking gas by Rs. 35 per cylinder.

This callous decision of the government has come at a time when the food inflation rate is around 17 per cent and the general inflation rate has reached double digits. India has the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of consumer price inflation in the world.

The UPA government has decided to deregulate the price of petrol and leave it to the market to determine. Going by the Kirit Parikh Report, the government is going to decontrol prices of all petroleum products, including diesel. This is going to prove disastrous for the economy and the country.

The government is giving false arguments to justify these measures. The prices of petrol and diesel were increased by Rs. 3 per litre only three months ago at the time of the Union Budget. International oil prices have not risen substantially in this period. Neither is the government prepared to rationalize the taxation structure on petroleum products which is adding to a price of petrol and diesel in a large measure.

It is a myth that such a step is being taken to protect the public sector companies from under-recoveries. The so-called under-recoveries are entirely based on notional prices calculated without any reference to the actual cost of production. In fact, the deregulation is only to help private companies who withdrew from the market because of the government price controls. Now they will be free to enter the market to make profits.

By deregulating petrol prices, the government has opened the way for continuous increases in the prices of petrol. By increasing the price of diesel and kerosene oil, the farmers and the poorer sections are going to be badly hit. The LPG increase will further burden the middle classes.

The Congress-led government has shown its callous and anti-people character by these measures.

The Left parties demand the immediate scrapping of the price increases. They call upon all their units to jointly launch protests against these hikes.

June 23rd Strike by Greek Workers : A resolute response to the capitalist and its supporters

Tens of thousands of striking workers participated in the demonstrations of All Workers’ Militant Front (PAME) on June 23 in Athens and in 60 cities across the country, declaring that they will not remain passive spectators of the slaughter of their rights, neither fall into the trap of the “lesser evil” set by the compromised trade union leaderships of GSEE and ADEDY. The strike demonstrations of PAME overcame the obstacles set by the government, the employers, and the yellow trade unionism along with other mechanisms e.g. media. The working people, the self-employed and the youth protested the barbaric policy of the social democrat government, the EU and the IMF which is also supported by the parties of ND and LAOS. Picket lines were mounted in numerous factories and workplaces throughout the country.

Once again, the port of Piraeus occupied centre stage. The strike organised by the seamen’s trade unions was declared illegal by the bourgeois tribunal. On the other hand, the ship-owners and their staff were deliberately sending tourists to the port although they knew that the strike was to take place as scheduled, using them as a vehicle for breaking the strike. Nevertheless, their efforts fell flat. For 24 hours, till the end of the strike no ship left the port while there was a wave of solidarity with the strike despite the ongoing bourgeois propaganda about “the abolition of legitimacy and institutions by PAME”. The bourgeoisie are particularly disturbed by the slogan “law is the rights of the workers” and for that reason they use all the dirty means in order to slander the struggles claiming that tourism is allegedly damaged by the strikes of PAME and not by the drastic reduction of the workers’ income.  At the same time GSEE and ADEDY did not participate in the strike functioning once again as a strike breaking mechanism.

Aleka Papariga, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece, made the following statement during the demonstration in Athens:

“All of us have to options: either the fatalist submission to poverty and misery that will spread even more or the counterattack with courage and endurance and the struggle for social and people’s prosperity”.

The success of the strike on June 23 constitutes a legacy for the escalation of the struggle and the determinance in the organisation of the new strike of PAME on 29 June against the offensive of the government, the EU, and the IMF on wages, collective labor agreements, social security and labor rights.

CORPSE OF DALIT BURIED IN DISPUTED BURIAL GROUND DESPITE POLICE RESISTANCE IN SORISPURAM under the leadership of TNEUF

The burial ground in the enjoyment of dalit People of Sorispuram in Tuticorin District (TN) for more than 6 decades was all of a sudden denied on the ground that it located in a patta land of a private party. The dalit people under the banner of TN Untouchability Eradication front (TNUEF) undertook different form of struggle but in vain. A picketing of Collectorate on 5.7.10 was declared. In the meantime one Sri nainar of age 85 died of sickness all of a sudden.

The villagers led by TNUEF leaders P.Esakkimuthu ( District Convener), K P.Perumal (District Secretary of AIKS) K.S.Arjunan (Town Secretary of CPI(M) and Sankarasubbu (AIKS), Marimuthu (Town Secretary of DYFI) Vai.Balu (CITU), took the corpse in procession to the disputed burial ground. The RDO and Police denied permission to enter into the burial ground. The processionist with the corpse,however, managed to enter into the burial ground by breaking the fence and the stone pillars, dig the ground and buried the corpse despite the police snatched the crowbar and spades used for digging the burial ground. Thus the dead body was buried and a memorial stone was laid near the buried place. The police force was all of a sudden withdrawn from the scene.

After the burial was over, P.Esakkimuthu, K.S.Arjunan and K.P.Perumal addressed the gathering stressing the need to rally behind the TNUEF to protect the rights of the dalits. It is thus again established that the abrogated burial ground can be restored with the unity and struggle of the dalit people under the banner of TNUEF despite fence, stonepillars and Police

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat launch a nation-wide campaign on 'Hidden dangers of the Bhopal gas disaster' on July 2 from Bhopal city

The campaign will focus on the laxity of the Congress regime and the US double standards which have messed up the lives of lakhs of people here.

During his stay in Bhopal, Karat will also take part in a meeting, to be attended by CPI leader Atul Kumar Anjan and others, to discuss issues related to the disaster.

Karnataka Government flouted SC direction: SFI

Students' Federation of India (SFI) has said that the Supreme Court had directed about five years ago that a committee be formed at the district level, headed by the Deputy Commissioner, to stop private and aided institutions from collecting donations or school development fees. However, this had not been done in any district.

Talking to presspersons N. Anantha Naika, secretary of the State unit of SFI, and K.L. Bhat, district convener of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said that the Supreme Court had given a direction in 2005 to form the committees with MLAs, parents, student leaders and principals of all colleges. It had directed that such committees meet periodically, particularly during the beginning of the academic year, to ensure that parents were not exploited.

SFI planned to move Supreme Court against the district administration. Mr. Naika said that many institutions collected huge sums from parents as donation. The stigma attached to government colleges that coaching there was average prompted most parents to admit their children in private institutions, he said.

Fee increase
SFI criticised the Government for increasing admission fees for first and second year PU by about 40 per cent. Earlier, the fees for first PU was Rs. 1,265, which has been increased to Rs. 1,815. The second PU fees has been increased to Rs. 2,130 from Rs. 1,490.

It condemned the Government for increasing the bus pass rate by Rs. 100 saying that the Transport Minister had promised about three months ago that he would not effect an increase for another three years. SFI had organised a State-level educational conference at Devangare on June 25 and 26, and over 400 student delegates and education experts from various parts of the State will take part in it.
