Brigade Ground will Witness a History On 9th February 2014

Sridip Bhattacharya
Throughout West Bengal, preparation for historic rally at Brigade Parade Ground, Kolkata on 9th February is in full swing. No doubt it is going to be a record mobilization on 9th February. Since 2012, February, for the first time Left Front has given a call for mobilization at Brigade Parade Ground. Nearly one million people who will be mobilized at Brigade Parade Ground on that day will take pledge to carry on their struggles on behalf of the fighting people of West Bengal.

Against Neo-Liberal Policies

Neo-liberal policies followed by the Congress Government at the centre are the root cause for the deteriorating living conditions of the people of our country. Price rise of all the essential commodities including Petrol, Diesel is due to anti-people neo-liberal policies. Ensuring food security for the people, especially for the poorer one is not the agenda of the Central Government. Toiling people throughout the country are fighting against price rise of all essential articles including food. Lakhs and lakhs of people will come to Brigade Parade Ground for strengthening this struggle. They will raise their voice against the neo-liberal policy, which is for subsidizing the rich but not the poor. People are not oblivious of the fact that BJP is also the champion of neo-liberal policy. TMC, which was earlier partner of both Congress and BJP, is not opposed to neo-liberal policy.

Against Atrocities On Women

West Bengal has got a heritage of strong democratic movements and struggles. Security of women in this state was well protected at right order. But during last 33 months of TMC rule, security of women is in danger. Each day, people of the state are witnessing one after one cases of rape and murder of women. From girl child to old-woman; nobody spared. Horrific and gruesome incidents of gang rapes and murder are occurring in this state. No exemplary punishments are there against the perpetrators of this horrific crime. Culprits are roaming here and there but no actions against them. Even there are cases like Madhyamgram, where Police tried to hijack the body of the mass rape victim. According to Crime Bureau of Government of India, West Bengal tops among the states in the case of atrocities against women. Protection of security and prestige of women has become the central issue which is drawing more and more people from all cross sections to the streets.

Defense of Democracy

Since 2011, when TMC led Government was formed in the state, process of trampling down democracy got an acceleration. Till now 143 left activist have been killed. Thousands have become victims of serious attacks by TMC hoodlums. Nearly 46 thousands of left activists are driven out of their locality. Thousands of Party and Mass organizations office destroyed and gutted.

During last 33 months all elections turned into a farce, Panchayat Election, Municipal Election, Students’ Union Election, Co-operative Election, School Committee Election etc. Creation of terror situation where no political campaign can be carried on by opposition including CPI(M) activists, capturing of booths and rigging of election by TMC hooligans are the rules in present day West Bengal.

Attacks on Educational institution are continuing. Known anti-socials of the localities are controlling the colleges and schools in many areas. Students are denied to form their unions democratically. Students, teachers, professors who are showing courage to raise their voice against authoritarian offensives are being made targets of attack.

Not only are the left forces, even the democratic people also facing various types of attacks. Courts, Human Rights Commission, Women Commission which are considered as pillars of Indian Democracy, are also not spared. Some people who supported and assisted TMC becoming disillusioned and taking to the streets in protest. They are now in the hit list. Harassment by Police of the opposition, especially left is happening freely in the state. Rallies, processions by the left are denied permission by police in many places. Even Hall meetings by Left Front are denied by administration. Protest demonstration led by Left Front Chairman Com. Biman Bose got attacked.

There is no doubt that democracy in the state curtailed and democratic right in West Bengal is in jeopardy. Fight for defense of democracy and democratic rights are getting sharpened day by day. From Coochbehar – adjacent to Assam to Purulia – adjacent to Jharkhand – in every district this fight is gaining strength. All the people who are involved in this battle are getting prepared to join the Brigade rally.

The battle which is on in the field of West Bengal is to be won by Left. We know it cannot be done in a few days. With clarity and determination CPI(M) and Left forces are carrying on their struggle. 9th February Brigade Rally will give a tremendous impulse to this struggle. Braving all obstacles and barriers nearly a million people are preparing them for creating a new history on 9th February at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.

AIDWA ON GANG-RAPE OF ADIVASI GIRL IN BIRBHUM, WEST BENGAL

It is shocking that not a day passes in West Bengal without one or the other incident of violence against women. The latest incident has taken place in Labhpur, Birbhum on 21st January , when a 20 year-old adivasi girl from the village of Rajrampur was abducted and gang-raped by 12 persons from the same village as she had dared to have a relationship with a non-tribal boy. This was done after a kangaroo-court called apparently by some village elders sought to extract a fine of Rs.50,000 from the girl’s family for this supposed offence, and the family pleaded their inability to pay the same. The couple were reportedly brought before the kangaroo-court bound hand and foot and even after the boy pleaded that he wanted to marry the girl, the perpetrators ignored him and gave the verdict for the girl to be raped as a punishment by those present. She was dragged to an adjoining room and attacked by a number of persons from her own village, and left severely injured in front of her house. The next day she went with her mother and lodged an FIR at Labhpur Thana, after which she was admitted to the PHC and then shifted to Siuri District Hospital. The police have so far arrested 11 persons on the basis of the FIR. An AIDWA led a deputation to the SP and several protest rallies have been conducted against the growing atmosphere of insecurity, especially for women in West Bengal.
Athough some arrests have been made in this particular case, it is necessary that the administration makes immediate arrangements for the full security of the survivor and her family. All the perpetrators and instigators must be arrested and a proper investigation conducted. It is increasingly the case in several districts of West Bengal including Birbhum that there is a growing atmosphere of violence has been increasing, with gangs of armed anti-socials taking the law in their own hands. This is because many of them enjoy the political patronage of the ruling party, as a result of which the police and the administration turn a blind eye to them. Consequently, lawlessness has been increasing at all levels, since there is now a feeling that such crimes can go unpunished. AIDWA expresses its grave concern about the situation, and stands by all those who are victims of the growing crimes against women in the state.

CPIM P.B. Communiqué

he Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) met in New Delhi on January 21 and 22, 2014. It has issued the following statement:

Curb Price Rise:
LPG Cylinders

The CPI(M) and the Left parties have been protesting against the exorbitant rise in the price of unsubsidized gas cylinders and the ceiling on subsidized gas cylinders of nine per year. Protests against this price rise were held in various parts of the country. In Kerala alone in 1400 places CPI(M) leaders began indefinite hunger strike from January 15.

As a result, the UPA government has now increased the number of subsidized cylinders per household to twelve per year.

However, the oil companies continue to insist on Aadhar linkage for the supply of subsidized gas cylinders and payment of the full market price for the cylinder on delivery and reimbursement later.

The Polit Bureau demands the scrapping of the Aadhar linkage and the delivery of the twelve cylinders at subsidized rates, as earlier. Aadhar linkage is also illegal in the light of the fact that there is no legal basis for Aadhar identification.

West Bengal

The Polit Bureau expresses serious concern at the number of gang-rapes and crimes against women in West Bengal. This has been exemplified by the horrific double gang rape of a sixteen year old girl at Madhyagram and her subsequent murder. West Bengal has registered the highest number of crimes against women in the country in the years 2011-12.

The Polit Bureau condemned the callous attitude and the failure of the Trinamul Congress government to take swift action against the culprits and effective steps to curb such crimes against women.

The ruling TMC continues with its rampage against democratic rights. All elected bodies and institutions are being subverted. Currently elections are being held to the college unions. Out of the 222 college union elections held so far, in most of them students of organisations opposed to the ruling party’s student organisation were not allowed to file nominations. Only in 36 colleges were they able to do so partially.

The Polit Bureau strongly condemned the murder of Saifuddin Mollah, a 25 year old SFI leader who was brutally beaten to death by TMC goons in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas.

Given the notorious record of the ruling party in rigging elections and preventing voters from casting their votes, the Election Commission should take special measures to ensure a fair and peaceful election.

Kerala

The Special Additional Sessions Court has given its verdict in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case. Originally 76 persons were accused in the case. Of these many were discharged in the course of the trial.

Now in the verdict announced, out of the 36 accused, 24 have been acquitted and 12 have been found guilty. Among those acquitted are Party leaders like P. Mohanan, a district Secretariat member of Kozhikode and another area committee secretary. This shows that the charge leveled of conspiracy by Party leaders has been proven to be false.

The Kerala State Committee will take appropriate decision after going through the judgment.

Lok Sabha Election

The Polit Bureau discussed the preparations for the Lok Sabha election. It approved the seats to be contested in a number of states. The PB also heard the report about the talks for electoral understanding with the non-Congress secular parties in certain states.

Central Committee Meeting

The Polit Bureau decided to hold the next meeting of the Central Committee on March 1 & 2, 2014. The election manifesto of the Party will also be finalized in this meeting.

On AAP Agitation

The wider question of the accountability of the police in Delhi is of vital concern to the people especially in the context of the rising number of crimes against women.

The agitation led by the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while raising this issue is defending the action of the Law Minister, Somnath Bharti and AAP supporters who targeted some African women in a locality in South Delhi. These women’s rights were violated and racist language was used against them. The minister had no business to direct such illegal activities. It is improper of the Chief Minister to cover up this act by citing the wider problem of police accountability to an elected government.

The question of the police being made accountable to the elected government in Delhi has to be resolved and the Central government must take it up to get this decided through parliament.

Adivasi struggles in Maharashtra and the Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch (AARM): A Note

The Adivasi population in Maharashtra as per the 2011 census is 1 crore 5 lakh. This is 9.4 per cent of the population of Maharashtra. In 2001 the proportion of the Adivasi population in the state was 8.9 per cent. Maharashtra has 10.17 per cent of the total tribal population in India. There are a total of 47 tribes and sub-tribes among the Adivasis in Maharashtra.

The Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch (AARM) was formed in Maharashtra at its first state convention held at the Comrade Godavari Shamrao Parulekar Bhavan at Talasari in Thane district on December 21-22, 2013. It was attended by 362 delegates from 15 districts, plus the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagarhaveli. There were 347 Adivasi delegates who came from 16 different tribes. The three major districts represented were the traditional bases of the Left movement in Maharashtra, viz Thane, Nashik and Nandurbar, but the significant feature was that representatives from a dozen other districts were also present.

The convention was addressed by Brinda Karat, Jitendra Choudhury and Dr Ashok Dhawale. There was a good discussion on the 18-page draft resolution placed by J P Gavit. The convention elected a 51-member state committee, which in turn elected J P Gavit (Nashik) as chairman, Barkya Mangat (Thane) as convenor and Jaising Mali (Nandurbar) as joint convenor. Veteran leaders L B Dhangar, Lahanu Kom and Kumar Shiralkar were elected as advisors. The two-day convention culminated in an impressive rally and public meeting.

Two years ago in November 2011, a preparatory state-level meeting to form the AARM was held at Belapur in New Mumbai. However, the platform and its work did not quite take off then. It has been resolved that this mistake should not repeat itself in the future.

Maharashtra has had a long and rich tradition of the Adivasi movement beginning with the historic Adivasi Revolt in Thane district from 1945-47 that was led by Comrades Shamrao and Godavari Parulekar under the red flag of the Kisan Sabha and the Communist Party. In the 1970s the movement spread to Nashik and Nandurbar districts. In the last one decade the movement among tribals has spread to newer districts like Nanded, Yavatmal, Ahmednagar, Amravati and Pune.

The traditional organisation that has been working among tribals for the last seven decades has been the AIKS. The AIKS is particularly strong in the tribal areas of Thane and Nashik districts and it also has good units in the tribal areas of Nandurbar, Nanded, Yavatmal, Ahmednagar, Amravati and Pune districts. The AIAWU has a good unit in Nandurbar district. The AIDWA and DYFI have good units in Thane district and some work in Nashik and some of the other districts above.

Hence our work report will briefly deal with the struggles led by the above mass organisations.

ON IMPLEMENTATION OF FOREST RIGHTS ACT

Two massive struggles were led by the AIKS in the last two years for the stringent implementation of the Forest Rights Act - in January-February 2011 and in April 2013. Over 50,000 tribals blocked state highways indefinitely on both occasions, forcing the state government to concede major demands. The two main issues that were raised were: mass rejection of thousands of genuine tribal claims to forest land, and granting land far less than what is actually being cultivated by tribals for long. Now a concerted follow-up is being conducted to see that the government decisions are implemented.

Another major land issue that has been taken up in Thane district is that concerning lands that are being tilled by tribals for several decades but which are still in the names of the old landlords. Now these lands are being sold to new fatcats and the tribals are being sought to be evicted. This is being opposed tooth and nail by all the mass organisations and struggles are being led on this issue.

ON INCLUSION OF NAMES OF RURAL POOR IN BPL LISTS

In 2012, the AIKS led another major statewide struggle for the inclusion of the rural poor in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) lists.  Large demonstrations of thousands of people were held in several tehsils of Thane, Nashik, Nandurbar, Ahmednagar, Nanded, Yavatmal, Pune and many other districts. The total mobilisation in this statewide agitation was over 1,20,000, of which over 75,000 was from the tribal belt. In some districts, as a result of consistent follow-up, thousands of names of the poor were included in the BPL lists.

ON IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NREGA

In districts like Nandurbar, Ahmednagar, Thane, Yavatmal and some other districts, struggles were led by the AIAWU, AIKS, AIDWA and DYFI demanding work and proper wages under the NREGA. Many of these actions were successful and the tribals in various places received work and wages.

The DYFI in Thane district took up the issue of registration of seasonal migrant labour and the issuance of identity cards to them.

ON FOOD SECURITY AND THE PDS

The AIDWA in Thane and Nashik districts was in the forefront of struggles for food security and against corruption and mismanagement in the PDS. Thousands of quintals of rains being diverted to the black market were caught by our activists resulting in the suspension of licenses of the guilty ration shop owners. Campaigns were led for ration cards to those who did not have any.

The issue of malnutrition-related deaths of children was taken up in Thane, Nandurbar and Amravati districts by means of dharnas and demonstrations.

In Nashik district it was under our imaginative leadership that the novel Doorstep Ration Scheme was first started in the tribal areas of Surgana tehsil. This scheme is now being implemented in the state. It has served to check corruption in the PDS and to provide guaranteed grain to the poor.

ON DRINKING WATER AND IRRIGATION

The issue of drinking water and water for irrigation has been taken up in several districts, especially in the light of chronic drought conditions. Tribal districts have been wilfully neglected and water from here is often taken away to the non-tribal districts and areas.

The classic example of this is Thane district which has the largest water reservoirs in Maharashtra, but the tribal areas are bereft of even drinking water, leave alone water for irrigation. This is in spite of the fact that many of the dams built in the tribal areas are funded by the tribal sub-plan.

Now there is a new proposed river-linking scheme that aims to submerge several villages in some tribal tehsils in Nashik and Thane districts and take the water away to Gujarat and Mumbai. This is being stoutly opposed by the AIKS.

ON EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND HEALTH

In several districts, local issues concerning education, employment and health have been taken up. The SFI has taken up the issues of admissions in secondary schools and colleges and of atrocities on girl students in ashram schools in Thane and Nashik districts.

In Thane, Nashik and Nandurbar districts, several schools with thousands of students are being run well by educational institutions under our leadership. One senior and junior college named after Comrade Godavari Parulekar at Talasari in Thane district is also being run with nearly 2000 students.

ON ATROCITIES AGAINST WOMEN

There have been growing incidents of attacks and sexual violence against women and girls in the tribal areas. The infiltration of consumerist culture with its commodification of women has adversely affected the security of women in tribal areas too. As is the experience elsewhere, the police administration is often hand in glove with the guilty in such cases. The AIDWA has taken up many such issues in Thane and Nashik districts, leading to the arrests of the guilty. The observance of International Womens Day on March 8 and the Savitribai Phule Birth Anniversary Day on January 3 by the AIDWA has helped to make tribal women conscious of their problems and their rights.  A sustained campaign against superstitions has been carried out by the AIDWA in the tribal areas.

No room for illusions, prepare for united struggle: JKPUF

Jammu Kashmir People’s United Front, the newly formed umbrella organization of several political outfits held its second convention in Jammu on Sunday, the 19th of January. The well attended convention was held at Kathua, where the front leaders addressed the workers of the area.

Explaining the aims and objectives of the front, the convener, Mohammd Yousuf Tarigami highlighted the acute problems and miserable conditions being faced by the people of the state. He exhorted the people to come out of slumber and prepare themselves for a relentless, protracted and result oriented struggle. No room for illusions, prepare for united struggles, he stressed.

Highlighting the problems of the people and the insensitive approach of the government, Tarigami said that instead of taking concrete measures to mitigate the sufferings of the masses and provide good governance, the political parties, which have been ruling the state for decades are creating mere illusions and selling dreams for electoral gains. He appealed the people to shun these illusions and launch a united and protracted struggle. Tarigami made it clear that the present grim scenario, which has compelled the majority to live a sub human life is rooted in the politico-economic frame, which has been created and perpetuated by the exploiting classes. The way out is, in shattering this frame and distancing from the forces which try to hoodwink people when the elections come closer. He also warned against the forces which feed on divisive and communal tendencies or regional and parochial mindset. He asked the people to ponder over the fact, as to who gained from the divisive and communal politics till now. “None but the advocates of this kind of politics” he asserted.

He advocated unity and said that regional or communal approach will only weaken the peoples common struggle against miss governance and exploitation. Tarigami advocated an alternative policy route that ensures basic rights and does not rely on charity. He also demanded food security, fool proof health care, right to employment, adequate unemployment allowance and welfare schemes for senior citizens and differently abled persons.

Sheikh Ab Rehman former M.P and state president of Samajwadi Party appealed the conscientious and well meaning people of the state to join the ranks of Peoples United Front. He highlighted the issues of unemployment, price rise and food security. He criticized the government for its dismal performance and alleged that the present dispensation has failed to fulfill its promises and has instead taken anti-people measures for the benefit of a privileged few. It has ignored the socially backward groups and hilly backward areas, while taking up developmental plans. The state resources especially the water resources have not been fully harnessed he asserted . Not only this the Govt has not been able to get compensation from the centre for the losses it suffers due to Indus water Treaty. Sheikh Ab Rahman exhorted the weaker sections and toiling masses to fight against exploitation under the banner of Peoples United Front.

I.D. Khajouria, State Chief of International Democratic Party attacked the government for perpetuating corruption and making it a way of life rather than weeding it out. He said, despite the tall claims of progress and development, the plight of the under privileged, farmers and workers remains miserable. Government is trying the age old machination of dividing people in the name of religion, region and caste, simply to cheat them and keep them away from the path of united struggle. He expressed the hope that the masses will understand these nefarious designs of the exploiting classes and will defeat them by forging unity and sustained struggle.

In the convention, it was resolved to approach all those who want basic changes and alternative policies for improving the lot of the common people. Political outfits, intellectuals and civil society groups were asked to come forward and join the People’s United Front for better future of the state.

Those who also addressed the convention include Sham Prasad Kesar, CPI (M) leader, Ishtiyaq Qadri PDF leader and Smt Santosh Khajouria IDP leader.

The New Year and the Struggles Ahead : AK Padmanabhan

The year 2013 has faded into history and it is the new dawn now!

For the working people of India, the year 2013 was a year of mass actions and struggles. The year began with the countrywide preparation for the historic 48 hour strike on 20th and 21st February. The strike, at the call of all the eleven central trade unions and national federations of various sections of employees and workers, was historic in its sweep and participation. More than 12 crore workers from almost all sectors of manufacturing, service etc. covering organized, unorganized and self employed sections participated in the massive strike action.

However, the approach and attitude of the Government at the center continued to remain the same as during the last 4 years of joint movement of all the central trade unions. But we all remember that there was a small difference. On the eve of the strike, exactly 28 hours before the commencement of the strike, a Group of Ministers, constituted by the Prime Minister had called the central T.U. leaders for a discussion!

The whole year has gone, without even a meaningful discussion on the Ten point Charter of Demands. These demands are the basic demands of the crores and crores of ordinary masses of the country. This was acknowledged even by the Prime Minister of the country.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, while inaugurating the 45th Indian Labour Conference on 17th May 2013 said – “The recent two-day strike by trade unions focused on a number of issues relating to the welfare not only of the working class but also the people at large. These include demands on which there can be no disagreement. For example, demands for concrete measures for containing inflation, for generation of employment opportunities, for strict implementation of Labour Laws, are unexceptionable”.

He also said “there can however be differences on the best ways of fulfilling these demands and we are willing to engage constructively with the trade unions in this regard”!
Before acknowledging the justness of the demands, PM had also claimed “our Government has paid very serious attention to the issues that Trade Unions have raised time to time”!
We need not go into further details. What has been the result of ‘constructive engagement’, and ‘serious attention’ of the Government on these ‘unexceptionable demands’ is well known.

On 22nd May, the Group of Ministers had asked for a month’s time for constructive discussion and we are still counting the days.

FOR A PROPER RESPONSE
It was this attitude that forced the Central Trade Unions to continue the struggle and that phase has concluded with the massive March to Parliament on 12th December.
The participation in the ‘March’ for exceeded the previous rally on 23rd February 2011. The anger among the workers was fully reflected in the rallies and court arrest programmes in September and the campaigns afterwards.

\The year 2013 also witnessed militant and massive struggles of various sections of workers – men and women – on basic issues of livelihood. There was not any section of workers, who have not been in struggle during the year – strikes, demonstrations, rallies – at the work spot level, local, state and national level as well.

There were innumerable struggles of working women also, during the year. Anganwadi workers and helpers, ASHA workers, Midday Meal workers, Artisans and traditional workers, plantation and beedi workers, women in the service and financial sectors, government employees etc have all been on the streets. They not only conducted militant struggles at the state and national level on their own demands but have been a significant part of all the CITU and joint trade union actions.

These struggles created an impetus for the united movement as well.
It was this anger and protest against the callous attitude of the Government on the issues confronting the workers, that brought the lakhs of men and women to the capital, braving the most unpleasant weather conditions and arduous travel from different corners of the country. In addition, lakhs of workers participated in the district level rallies in various states on the same day.

The delegation of central T.U. leaders which met the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister was not given any concrete assurance on the demands of the workers. But the unions told the Government, rather, gave a stern warning that – “the trade union movement cannot accept the present state of inaction and indifference on the pressing demands of the workers and people lying down and will heighten their united struggle in
the face of continuing unresponsiveness”.

Now, it is for the unresponsive government to act. Otherwise the working people all over the country will have to give a fitting response to the ruling class.
Already, the people all over the country are up in arms against the Government. In the recent state assembly elections, the main ruling party at the center, the Congress, has been punished by the people.
But the working people will have to be vigilant. The high decibel campaign let loose by the corporates, both Indian and Multinational, to project the leader of the highly divisive communal party, BJP, as the alternative has to be met with a people oriented campaign putting forward a set of alternate policies. The real character of the corporate led campaign has to be thoroughly exposed.

OUR TASKS AHEAD
The task in the New Year, which is going to be the year of General Elections, has to be this patriotic responsibility of mobilizing people for upholding pro-people policies. Along with the issue of economic policies, we have to mobilize people to safeguard the secular fabric of the country which is being challenged by various communal forces.

In addition to these, for members of CITU, the coming year has to be the year when we have to make all out efforts to fulfill the tasks finalized by our 14th All India Conference.
It is not necessary to go into those issues again. But, the tasks of increasing our membership, streamlining organizational activities at various levels of our organization, taking up issues of social oppression etc. have to be the priorities in the New Year.

Struggles on issues of unemployment, increasing disparities, denial of democratic rights and attacks on the livelihood of working people are finding more and more support all over the world. The machinations of the imperialists are increasing and at the same time they are under pressure from various sections. The New Year will witness more and more struggles and it is for the working people of the country to be well prepared for that.

For the millions of members of CITU, it is time to be prepared to be in the forefront of all these struggles and to channelise them towards a massive peoples movement, by “Reaching the unreached” and “Intensifying class struggle for a change in the system!”

Left parties plan Agitation Against Price Rise

Leaders of the Left parties, the CPI(M), CPI, AIFB & RSP met in New Delhi today. They have issued the following statement:

The Left parties express serious concern at the crushing burden of price rise which is affecting all sections of the people. There is no respite in the upwards spiral of prices of food items and essential commodities with food inflation reaching a record high of 20 per cent.

The UPA government is adding fuel to the fire by continuously increasing the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG and CNG.

The Left parties decided to conduct a protest campaign against price rise with the following demands:

1.         Stop increase in the prices of petroleum products. Restore administrative price mechanism.
2.         No to Aadhar linkage being made mandatory for delivery of services and subsidies to the people.
3.         End hoarding and speculation of essential commodities and conduct de-hoarding campaign.
4.         No privatization of basic services and conduct audit of those private companies utilizing public resources and delivering basic services.
5.         Ensure universal public distribution system.

The Left parties call upon all its state units to conduct the anti-price rise agitation between January 15 and 31.

The meeting was attended by A.B. Bardhan, Prakash Karat, S Sudhakar Reddy, Debabrata Biswas, Sitaram Yechury and Abani Roy.

Mammoth Rally in Kolkota against misurel of TMC government

Tens of thousands of people from North 24 Parganas district marched to Kolkata on Wednesday, demanding an end to attacks on democracy, continuing attacks on women and all-round anarchy in the state. They also raised specific demands of the district. The rally, called by CPI(M) North 24 Parganas district committee turned into a mammoth one.

The rally was the culmination of intensive campaign which included more than 40 public meetings throughout the district. Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury, Manik Sarkar, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Biman Basu, Surjya Kanta Mishra were among speakers of those area-based meetings in November and December. CPI(M) activists went door to door with campaign materials for nearly two months.

On Wednesday, people started to gather from morning in Rani Rasmoni Road in Kolkata in buses, trains and even in boats decorated with red flags. But the most spectacular was the huge procession which started from Sealdaha Station and marched through central Kolkata to the venue of the rally. It was a sea of red flags, declaring that the Lefts in Bengal are invincible. Entire area in Kolkata’s heartland was flooded with people.

Addressing the rally, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that the state was being ruled by a party of criminals. The state has showed a dangerous decline in agriculture, industry, employment generation. The rule of law is absent.

On the coming Lok Sabha Elections, Bhattacharjee said that Congress has been virtually out of the race even before the elections. Ten years of UPA rule has increased misery of the people and now the people has turned their faces from Congress. The exit of Manmohan Singh is also fraught with attempt of a monster’s attempt to grab power at the centre. Narendra Modi is a deadly combination of RSS and corporate.
